Baysox Hurler Sarmiento Tosses Masterpiece
Alfredo Sarmiento of the Bowie Baysox was on top of his game.

The 19-year-old tantalized the Richmond Flying Squirrels with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.

"He had the changeup working," Richmond manager Ron Mendel said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Bowie hurler had 1 strikeout, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 1 hit in his complete-game effort.

Sarmiento told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

To date Sarmiento is 3-4 in 7 starts with a 2.78 ERA and has 27 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
