New York (A) designated hitter Mike Mehaffey had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Mehaffey hit 3 home runs, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 5, even as Detroit beat the Yankees, 14-11. Vince Lennon, now 3-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 1.2 innings. The first-place Tigers, at 54-43, lead the American League North Division by 9½ games.

Sean Barksdale had a big grand slam home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Detroit trailing 9-8 and the bases loaded, he sized up a screwball from Bill Melo, who finished 5th in the AL in innings pitched with 204.2 in 2041, and punished it. The result was his 23rd home run of the season, which put the Tigers on top, 12-9.

"I felt good up there," said Barksdale. "I saw the ball well."
