Mariners Upend Yankees, 6-5
|
Though he had a terrific game, Johnny Woodbury could not prevent his team, the New York (A) Yankees, from absorbing a loss. Seattle won the game, 6-5. Woodbury went 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Chance McIver snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-0 on the season. Mike Cullison suffered the loss. Jimmy Roehling got the save, his 14th in 18 chances.
Chris Plein had a big 2-run home run for the Mariners in the top of the fourth inning. With Seattle leading 3-2 and a runner on 1st, he got a changeup from Mike Cullison, who is tied for 9th in the AL in quality starts with 10, and swatted a home run to left. It was his 1st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mariners ahead, 5-2.
"We ground out the win," said Plein. "That's all that matters."
The Mariners now have a record of 38-47 with the win over New York (A).
