Mata Leads Royals to Win
|
The exploits of second baseman Al Mata, who is on pace for 113 RBI this season, helped the Kansas City Royals defeat the Chicago (A) White Sox, 6-2. Mata was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Ed Montgomery was the winner. He's now 2-5. The loser was Kit Fedewa. Picking up his 17th save was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Joe Harper.
Mata contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for Kansas City in the bottom of the third. With his team trailing 2-1, Mata took a fastball from Kit Fedewa and stroked the home run to left. His 20th home run of the season allowed the Royals to leap in front, 4-2.
"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Mata, "one at-bat at a time."
Kansas City goes to 32-24. The win puts them 2 games up in their division.
