Houston Sunk by Los Angeles, 3-2
|
Los Angeles picked up a win at Astrodome, bumping off the Houston Astros, 3-2. Pitcher John Smoltz was a major reason the Dodgers emerged victorious. Smoltz picked up the win for Los Angeles, going 7 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 2-0. Mike Timlin earned the save for Los Angeles, his 6th of the year.
Had Mark Whiten not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Whiten hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Dodgers.
"John showed what he's made of," said Los Angeles manager Phil Jacques.
Losses have been few and far between for the Astros, now 10-2.
