Vargas Fashions No-Hitter Against Quakes
The no-hitter is one of baseball's truly egalitarian achievements. It's done by the great and the not-so-great alike, and for nearly all of them it represents the pinnacle of a career. Lake Elsinore Storm pitcher Jorge Vargas had his moment at Lake Elsinore Diamond, holding the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes hitless and beating them, 2-0.

"Everything was working for him," Quakes manager said. "He had a lot of late movement that seemed to cause the guys trouble, especially from the fifth inning on. He was in command."

Vargas rung up 14 strikeouts, issued 2 walks and faced only 29 hitters in his historic outing. After the game, he spoke to BNN reporters in the Lake Elsinore locker room.

"I really got nervous in the last inning," Vargas recalled. "I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter but it was hard to stay calm and concentrate. Thank goodness for my catcher. He told me he would do all the thinking and I could just concentrate on hitting his glove."

Vargas has made 8 starts so far this year and put up a 4-4 won-lost record with a 4.47 ERA. In 50.1 innings he has allowed 35 hits, walked 28 and struck out 59.
