Detroit Loss Takes Shine Off Mason Performance
|
The Boston Red Sox withstood an impressive performance by Detroit third baseman Clint Mason to defeat the Tigers, 9-7, at Fenway Park. Mason hit 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice. The winning pitcher was Humberto Medina. His record now stands at 8-9. The right-hander went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits for the Red Sox. The first-place Red Sox, at 59-40, now lead their division by 4 games.
Cam Collier had a big grand slam home run for the Red Sox in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Boston leading 3-0 and the bases loaded, he sized up a fastball from Jimmy Beall, who is tied for 10th in the AL with a 9.3 K/9 rate, and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Red Sox on top, 7-0.
"Winning is always a team effort," Collier said after the game.
