Clemens Handcuffs Giants, Astros Seize 1-0 Advantage in DS
|
Leave it to the veteran.
The Houston Astros got a great start from 35-year-old right-hander Roger Clemens, as Houston won the contest, 4-1, at Astrodome. Clemens threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball in the win, which allowed the Houston to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Johnny Damon dealt the Giants a blow in the bottom of the fifth. Batting with a runner on 2nd and Houston leading 2-1, Damon, who finished 5th in the NL in triples with 9 in 1997, hit a 2-1 curveball for a 2-run home run.
"There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'Houston Astros (probably) 1997 World Series Champions'," Damon told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'"
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Astrodome in Houston. Slated to start are Pat Rapp for the San Francisco Giants and Ismael Valdez for the the Houston Astros.
