Indians Bedevil Mariners, 6-5
|
With left fielder Alex Zarate leading the charge, the Cleveland (AZL) Indians defeated the Seattle (AZL) Mariners, 6-5, at Indians Developmental Complex. Zarate was 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBI. Ron Slayden claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. His record stands at 2-0. Leo Sanchez locked down his 6th save.
Had Willie Vilches not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Vilches hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Indians.
In postgame comments, Vilches told the Cleveland (AZL) Citizen: "Do people still doubt I give 100 percent?"
The 7th-place Indians lifted their record to 12-13.
