Gems Advance to Round 2 Wednesday, September 30th , 1903 The Providence Gems are moving on to the Round 2 after eliminating the Newport Pilot Whales in the Round 1. Providence won the final game by a 8-3 count at Newport Grounds and the series 4-1. Harley Payne was key to the Gems win, as he was named series MVP, thanks in large part due to his 0.67 ERA over 27 innings. He also added 12 strikeouts with a 2-0 record. "Onwards and upwards," the MVP said. "I'm just focusing on my next time on the mound now." The Providence Gems don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Templeton Red Onions - New Haven Regicides series. New Haven leads the series 3 games to 2. The Round 2 schedule will be announced after the Round 1 finishes.
