Coventry Shuts Out Sheffield, 5-0
Tuesday, July 17th , 1906
It wasn't easy but the Coventry Motors made it look that way.
Starter Julio Piñero shut out the Sheffield Talons despite having what he later called "sub-par" stuff, and the Coventry Motors cruised to victory, 5-0. Piñero allowed only 2 hits and rang up 2 strikeouts but insisted later that he did not deserve primary credit for the win.
"It didn't feel quite right today, but I got a lot of help to get through," he said. "I trusted my catcher and the guys behind me bailed me out more than once when I screwed up."
This year, Piñero has a 9-5 mark in 17 starts with a 1.80 ERA. He has given up 144 hits in 144.2 innings, struck out 28 and issued 21 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .257 batting average against him.
