Burkett No-Hits Chicago
Monday, September 14th , 1903
The Philadelphia Phillies relied on no-hit stuff from starter Jesse Burkett to defeat the Chicago Orphans, 4-0, at West Side Grounds 1894-1915.
"It's quite a thrill," Burkett told the media afterward. "This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can't believe I did it."
To get his name logged in the Eastern League records, he stopped Chicago cold and hitless, surrendering 3 walks and fanning 5 of the 31 batters he faced.
Philadelphia manager Jamie Perrone was in a jovial mode after the game, kidding with reporters that Burkett "made managing easy today."
"I didn't have hardly any decisions to make like I usually do," he said. "I didn't even have to come up with a pinch hitter."
To date this year, Burkett is batting .303 with 4 home runs.
