6-for-8 Day for Warburton
Sunday, July 25th , 1897
A jubilant Cedric Warburton joined the postgame press conference at Artists Grounds today to offer some unusual words of encouragement -- for the Santa Fe Hollyhocks pitching staff he had just vanquished.
"It may not have looked like it," said the Taos Artists first baseman, "but I saw some awful good pitches today. If luck hadn't been on my side it might have turned out a lot different."
That would not have been the conclusion of anyone who saw his dominant 6-for-8 hitting performance, which led the Artists to a 5-2 win.
"He made it look easy," said John Hoffman, manager of the Hollyhocks. "We never figured out what to do with him. Obviously."
Cedric Warburton hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, flied out in the 8th, doubled in the 11th, flied out in the 13th, singled in the 15th and singled in the 17th.
This year Warburton has hit at a .345 clip with 44 RBIs, 1 home run and 53 runs scored.
