Martín Fires 5-0 Shutout for Carolina
Wednesday, September 16th , 1903
Juan Martín of the Carolina Tumbabrazos was on top of his game.

The 32-year-old tantalized the Guanica Amigos with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.

"He had the changeup working," Guanica manager Claudio Chávez said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Carolina hurler had 2 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Martín told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

To date this season, Martín has compiled a 19-15 record with a 2.04 ERA in 34 starts.
