Neil Hughes of the Sheffield Talons was on top of his game.

The 34-year-old tantalized the Derby Rams with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.

"He had the changeup working," Derby manager Nicolás Chávez said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Sheffield hurler had 1 strikeout, gave up no walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Hughes told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

On the season, Hughes has a 7-12 record with a 3.24 ERA.
