Ponce pitcher Tomás Sánchez had a large part in his team beating the Villalba Mercaderes, 3-2. The left-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Sánchez went the distance for Ponce. He gave up 2 runs on 11 hits. The first-place Senores now have a win-loss record of 46-24.

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out and the game tied, 2-2, slick-fielding second baseman Marcos Aldarondo won it for Ponce. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Aldarondo hit a first pitch sinker from Miguel Mares for a run-scoring single, giving his team the 3-2 win.

"Tough loss," said Villalba manager Jorge Rosales. "But we'll learn from it."
