When the stakes were high, Salustiano Contreras raised his game to match.

The right-handed Contreras turned in a stellar performance in Game 3 of the Championship of New England, pitching a 10-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Bennington Melodeons to victory. He allowed 11 hits and struck out 9. The win gave Bennington a 2-1 lead over the New Haven Regicides in the best-of-7 series.

The most critical at-bat came in the top of the tenth inning. With no one out, Eduardo Frésquez hit a 1-1 curveball from Herb Goodall for a 2-run single. It put Bennington in front, 5-3.

"There's nothing like the postseason," said Contreras, "to ramp up the pressure."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Stuart Park in New Haven.
