The Rio Grande Zarzas topped the Luquillo Comecocos, 5-2, in Liga José Padilla action at Parquecito de Luquillo. The standout performance belonged to Rio Grande pitcher and Brisbane, Australia, native Rupert Clark. Clark, the winner, moves to 3-9. He threw 9 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 1 and giving up 3 walks. Rio Grande is now 46-36. Luquillo is 43-39.
Rio Grande used the timely hitting of Sabino Durán to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Zarzas on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Rupert had good arm action, good stuff," said Rio Grande manager Jorge Sánchez.
