Mercaderes Get Clutch Win Versus Ponce
Crowds lined up early in front of Estadio de Villalba, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1904 Liga Nacional Puertorriquena season. On the mound was Enrique Caballero for the visiting Ponce Senores and Tafari Mungai for the hometown Villalba Mercaderes. In a spirited contest, the Mercaderes pulled out the win, defeating the Senores by the score of 3-2. Especially impressive was Tafari Mungai. In 9 innings, Mungai surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4. He allowed 2 runs.

Villalba took a 3-2 lead on Aristóteles Reyes's 1st double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Reyes hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Ponce pitcher Enrique Caballero visibly frustrated.

"The other side played a good game," said Ponce manager Mariano Guerra. "You tip your cap to them."
