The Bennington Melodeons earned a close win over the Lewiston Quebeckers, thanks in part to Salustiano Contreras. The Bennington right-hander, who is tied for 4th in the NNEA with a 1.18 WHIP, played a key role in the 3-1 victory. Contreras, now 15-9, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 10 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. The win puts the Melodeons at 48-44, while the Quebeckers drop to 44-48.
Bennington used the timely hitting of Eduardo Frésquez to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Melodeons on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
Frésquez called the win "a lesson in teamwork."
