Newport Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in R1
|
When the stakes were high, Báquides Pelayo raised his game to match.
The right-handed Pelayo turned in a stellar performance in Game 3 of the Round 1, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Newport Pilot Whales to victory. He allowed 4 hits and struck out 6. The win gave Newport a 2-1 lead over the Providence Gems in the best-of-7 series.
In his 123-pitch effort, Pelayo allowed 1 run on 4 hits over 9 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 6.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Newport manager Pablo Morales said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Newport Grounds in Newport.
