Spuds Squelch Melodeons Offense in Shutout Win
|
The home crowd had a good time watching the Bennington Melodeons and Derry Spuds get after it.
Bennington got a decent performance from pitcher José Romero, but it wasn't enough to beat the Derry Spuds. Derry won the The Patch contest, 3-0. Romero threw 8.0 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. The win was credited to Valeriano Pacheco in relief. His record improves to 1-0. José Romero took the loss. Generoso Juárez earned save number 1 this season.
Big Bill Smith had a big 2-run home run for the Spuds in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Derry leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a fastball from 27-year old right-handed pitcher José Romero and punished it. The result was his 3rd home run of the season, which put the Spuds on top, 3-0.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Derry manager John Fox said.
The Spuds, now 9-2, have had a terrific start to the season.
