Juan Rivera of the Superior Whalebacks was on top of his game.
The 28-year-old tantalized the Marquette Smelters with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.
"He had the changeup working," Marquette manager Randy Silander said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Superior hurler had 1 strikeout, gave up 4 walks and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.
Rivera told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This year, Rivera has compiled a 4-4 record with a 4.14 ERA in 11 starts.
