Rays Hurler Pumphrey Tosses Masterpiece Sunday, July 26th , 1998 The GCL Rays did little to support starter Ken Pumphrey against the GCL Twins, but it turned out he didn't need the help. The right-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Twins, striking out 7 and surrendering 5 hits. The performance from Pumphrey allowed GCL to escape with the 1-0 win despite an anemic offense. "Nobody came to me and said 'Ken, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," Pumphrey told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it." So far this year Pumphrey has 3 wins and 1 loss and a 2.68 ERA. |
