Mets Get Past Washington for 5-4 Win
|
Washington wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Willie Martinez, falling to the New York Mets, 5-4. Martinez threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. With the win, the Mets have a record of 44-70.
New York used the timely hitting of Howie Kendrick to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Mets on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We ground out the win," said Kendrick. "That's all that matters."
