Reds Sneak Past Brewers, 2-1
|
Milwaukee wasted a solid 8-inning effort from starting pitcher Robert Averette, losing to Cincinnati, 2-1, at Great American Ball Park. Reliever David Shafer picked up the win. His record improves to 7-1. Tim Collie, who finished 5th in the NL in saves with 30 in 2002, took the loss. The Reds have now won 4 straight.
The Reds were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth inning, when 26-year old catcher John Baker landed a big blow. He turned a 1-0 cutter from Tim Collie into a 2-run single. The walk-off single sent the Great American Ball Park denizens into a frenzy and sent the Reds home with a thrilling 2-1 win.
"Can't say enough about our pitching," said Baker.
