Cincinnati shortstop Mike Aviles pounded Houston Astros pitchers at Minute Maid Park, but it was not enough to keep the Reds from falling, 9-8, in Game 1 of the Division Series. Aviles went 3-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3, though he couldn't keep the Reds from slipping to a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-5 series.

Danny Ortega broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It put the Astros in front, 7-6. For the game, Ortega went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI.

"We're happy," Ortega told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
