Marlins Trip Mets, 7-5
|
The Florida Marlins beat the New York Mets, 7-5, at Shea Stadium. Tony Rodas, in particular, was impressive. He was 3 for 5 with a home run and a double. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Saul Rivera, who leads the NL in holds with 15, was the winner in relief. His record is now 2-1. The losing pitcher was Chris Cumberland. The first-place Marlins, at 56-34, now lead their division by 6½ games.
Had Jay Woolf not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Woolf hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Marlins.
"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Woolf. "You've got to get results."
