Expos Slap 10-9 Loss on Florida
|
The Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins lit up the scoreboard.
Florida got a terrific game from third baseman Jay Woolf. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Montreal, 10-9. Woolf went 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Rigoberto Blancas, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 4 runs on 7 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5. His record now stands at 6-4. Chris Hernandez earned the save for Montreal, his 12th.
In the bottom of the sixth, Montreal left fielder Antonio Elizondo put his team on top. With no one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit his 3rd home run of the year. Florida pitcher Juan Padilla served it up. Just like that, the Expos were ahead, 6-4.
In comments to the Montreal Gazette, Elizondo admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
The 4th-place Expos bumped their record to 35-45.
