Doves Spellbound, Smith Hurls No-Hitter Wednesday, May 26th , 1915 Is it better to be lucky or good? After leading the Twin City Empire to victory, 6-0, and tossing a no-hitter over the Cincinnati Doves, Wellington Smith didn't have the answer. "I don't know," Smith said. "To do what I did today, I'm pretty sure it takes both." On his big day at The Peoples Park of Minnesota, Smith fanned 7 and had 1 walk. And it seemed that when the Doves managed to hit the ball hard, it went right at a defender. "That's how you get a no-hitter," Smith said with a smile. "A lot of skill mixed with a little luck."
