Richmond third baseman John Whitelegg was sensational. He went 4-4 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Providence beat the Rifles, 6-4. The winner was Audie Darwin, who threw 144 pitches over 8 innings. The left-hander was charged with 4 runs on 10 hits. For the Rifles, the loss makes their record 8-13.

Thomas Sebring had a big 2-run double for the Angels in the bottom of the third inning. With Providence leading 3-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a fastball from Hector Leacroft, the 11th overall pick in the 1917 draft, and swatted a double to center. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Angels ahead, 5-0.

"We ground out the win," said Sebring. "That's all that matters."
