Payne, Athletics Take Dramatic Game 1 for 1-0 Series Lead
When the games really matter, the Cleveland Athletics put on their best show, beating the Richmond Rifles by a final score of 3-2 today. Constant Payne threw 11.0 innings of 9-hit ball. Cleveland now leads Richmond 1-0 in the best-of-9 affair.

A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 3rd and two out in the bottom of the eighth inning. That's when first baseman Ansel Hawley, who finished 2nd in the WL in slugging percentage with .406 in 1910, hit a 2-run triple. The Athletics went on to win.

"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Cleveland manager James Victors said.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Bozeman Municipal Park in Cleveland.
