Empire Win, 5-3, in 11
|
Nelson Rathbourne made an impact in the 5-3 Twin City win over Saint Louis. Rathbourne, who finished 5th in the WL in batting average with .306 last year, went 3-3 with a double, 2 singles, and 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Elwin Compton, credited with the win in relief, is now 3-1. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. Alton Kirkup, who finished 4th in the WL in strikeouts with 161 in 1910, nailed down the save.
Twin City used the timely hitting of Abner Turner to seize the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run single in the top of the 11th inning to put the Empire on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"See ball, hit ball. When I think too much, that's when I get in trouble," Rathbourne told the Twin City Daily News.
Twin City is now 13-15, Saint Louis 11-15.
