Durtnell Bewilders Bakers in 3-0 Shutout
|
The Brooklyn Whales shut out the New York Bakers, 3-0, behind the strong pitching of Jewell Durtnell. Durtnell surrendered only 4 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 5.
Following the last out, Durtnell appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for New York manager Mason Sempill, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Durtnell's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Bakers skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Whales press conference, Durtnell confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Durtnell said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Brooklyn manager Marques Williams added.
Thus far this season, Durtnell has worked 325.1 innings with 111 strikeouts en route to a 19-12 record and a 2.21 ERA.
