Angels Stymie New York, Take 5-1 Win
|
The Providence Angels defeated the New York Kings, 5-1, at Cartwright Stadium. John Alford, who finished 3rd in the EL in hits with 130 last year, was a standout performer for Providence. His 3 hits included 2 singles and 1 double -- this in addition to the 3 runs he scored and 2 he knocked in. Phil Beer, the winner, is now 10-10. He struck out 7 and walked 1 over 8 innings, while allowing 1 run on 10 hits. The loss makes New York 49-45.
With Providence trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Alford hit a forkball from Henry Selvey for a 2-run double. It was his 13th double of the season and put the Angels ahead, 2-1.
"Enjoyed this one," Alford told the Providence News. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
