Thrice Is Nice: Bunch Unloads 3 Homers
Sunday, September 2nd , 2068
It's a rare event when a player hits three homers in a game and rarer still when he does it and loses.
It happened at Grayson Stadium, as Ray Bunch of the Savannah Sand Gnats unloaded three times against the Fort Wayne TinCaps but was still bumped off, 9-8, by the TinCaps.
"We were lucky to win today," said Fort Wayne skipper Stéphane Maisonneuve. "You can't give up that many home runs and expect to win on a regular basis."
For the game, the Savannah third baseman had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, scored 3 times, and drove in 6.
Bunch spoke to the writers in the postgame press room with mixed feelings, saying he was sad to lose but happy to be seeing the ball well.
"I was just trying to swing early and often to give myself a chance," he said. "I let the pitcher supply all the power and try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."
Ray Bunch was hit by a pitch in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Shannon Powers in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Shannon Powers in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off Tyler Brown in the 9th.
Currently Bunch is batting .305 with 24 home runs and 53 RBIs.
