Round 1 Goes the Distance, Columbia Prevails
The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat were on full display tonight at Silkworms Ballpark as the Round 1 stretched to the final game.

It was the Columbia Fireflies feeling the thrill of victory, with a 14-4 win over the Bluefield Blue Jays, who were feeling the devastation of coming up short in their quest to make the Round 2.

"There's no way around it -- this sucks," said Bluefield manager Robert Mckenzie. "Congratulations to Columbia, but I won't sugarcoat it, no one is happy about anything that transpired here tonight."

Instrumental in the 4-3 series win was first baseman Randall Ricks, who was named MVP. He hit .429 with a .458 on-base percentage. He had 3 home runs, drove in 9 RBI and scored 6 runs.

"We've got the most important stat of all and that's this final win -- that's the one that matters," he said.

The Columbia Fireflies will play against the Lexington Legends in the next round. Lexington had a bye in the Round 1. The Round 2 schedule will be announced after the Round 1 finishes.
