The Toledo Mud Hens did little to support starter Luis Mendez against the Columbus Clippers, but it turned out he didn't need the help.
The right-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Clippers, striking out 7 and surrendering 8 hits. The performance from Mendez allowed Toledo to escape with the 3-0 win, despite an anemic offense.
"Nobody came to me and said, 'Luis, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," Mendez told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it."
This year, Mendez has compiled a 2-1 record with a 6.88 ERA in 7 starts.
