Padres Lose Late to Giants
|
Both offenses were relatively subdued at Oracle Park. Fortunately for the San Francisco Giants, though, Jon Gurney was able to deliver in the clutch. He threw 9.0 innings of 2-hit ball, to lead his team past the San Diego Padres, 2-1. Gurney yielded 1 run over 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. His record improves to 5-7. San Francisco is now 77-72.
Up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, 30-year old left fielder Max Parman had a chance to be the hero. San Diego pitcher Mike Blakely wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Parman hit a sacrifice fly. The Giants had themselves a thrilling win.
In comments to the San Francisco News, Gurney insisted that he's not as disinterested as it often appears. "Haters will hate," he added.
