Cardinals Jolt Yankees, 6-3, with Late Rally
|
The St. Louis Cardinals downed the New York Yankees, 6-3. The hitting star was catcher Donnie Patterson. Patterson was 1-2 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Cardinals. Andy Nelson, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 30th save. The win elevated the Cardinals to 69-46.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Jose Bautista came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing New York pitcher Jim Alcantar, he hit a 2-1 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 4-3.
St. Louis manager Joe D said his team played a "no nonsense" game.
