Cardinals Bridle Nationals, 4-3
|
The St. Louis Cardinals did just enough to sneak past the Washington Nationals, 4-3, at Busch Stadium. St. Louis pitcher Jon Tapia, in particular, had a standout performance. Chad Rottenberg nailed down his 9th save. St. Louis is 4th in the National League Central Division with a record of 54-59.
Had Ted Phillips not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Phillips hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Cardinals.
"We take it day by day here," said Phillips, "and today was a good one for us."
