Nationals Win Thriller, 5-2
|
In the 5-2 Washington win over San Diego, the impact of Ken Whitcomb was substantial. Whitcomb, who finished 2nd in the NL in batting average with .333 in 2040, went 1-1 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. The win belonged to Josh Shortall in relief. His record improves to 8-5. Dave Hogan took the loss for San Diego. The Nationals bumped their record to 53-50 with this win.
The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the ninth. With Washington trailing 2-1, Whitcomb jumped on a fastball from 26-year old right-handed pitcher Dave Hogan and hit a grand slam home run to center. With one swing, the Nationals had a walk-off win.
In postgame comments to the Washington Bulletin, Whitcomb said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
