Cubs Come Back Late to Top Giants, 4-2
|
San Francisco got a terrific performance from designated hitter Jon Gurney, but it wasn't enough to beat the Chicago Cubs. Chicago won the Oracle Park contest, 4-2. Gurney threw 7.0 innings of shutout ball for the losing team. Kevin Creel, who is tied for 10th in the NL with a 9.4 K/9 rate, was the winning pitcher. Over 7 innings, he allowed 1 run on 6 hits, with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. The triumph puts Chicago at 42-40 for the season.
Jon Solano came through with a big-time hit for Chicago. The right fielder smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 4-1. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
Solano called the win a testament to his team's "tenacity."
