Tampa Bay Wins, Williams has 3 hits
|
With shortstop Carson Williams leading the charge, the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox, 8-1, at Tropicana Field. Williams, who finished 3rd in the AL in wins above replacement with 6.1 last year, was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 4. Jacob Lopez got the win, improving to 1-0. He worked 5.2 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 1. Spencer Strider got the save, the 1st for him this season.
With Tampa Bay leading 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Williams hit a changeup from Ryan Ammons for a grand slam home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Rays ahead, 8-1.
"We were firing on all cylinders," said Rays manager Dan Shepherd.
The win gives Tampa Bay a record of 4-1.
