In a low-scoring affair between the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals, pitcher Dylan Smith was the difference between victory and defeat. The Detroit right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 2-1 Tigers win. Carlos Marcano was credited with the save for Detroit, his 36th of the season. The Tigers bumped their record to 81-73 with this win.

Riley Greene was 1-3 with a double for Detroit. The two-time Gold Glove Award winner had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Calvin Ziegler. It was his 71st RBI of the season.

"Dylan made the big pitches when he needed to," said Detroit manager Snake Clement.
