Cardinals Score Late, Clip Cubs, 5-4
|
Conditions were not ideal but St. Louis and Chicago were able to put their game in the books.
St. Louis beat Chicago at Busch Stadium, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to shortstop Tommy Edman. He went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Guillermo Zuniga claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. His record stands at 2-2.
Had Dylan Carlson not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Carlson hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-3, in favor of the Cardinals.
"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Edman told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
The loss makes Chicago 54-50.
