In a low-scoring contest, New York pitcher Greg Cappel was marvelous, enabling his team to nab a 2-1 win. Juan Gonzales, 9-10, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. Melvin Polanco closed it out for his 36th save.
New York took the lead, 2-0, on Willie Medrano's 16th home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off Tampa Bay pitcher Mike Wells in the bottom of the eighth.
"Greg is a tough competitor," said New York manager Harry Jacoby.
The loss makes Tampa Bay 76-76.
