Cubs Down Pirates, 6-5
|
Andrew Phillips led the charge as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, in 10 innings at Wrigley Field. Phillips, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2040 draft, went 3-6 with 2 doubles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Al Quintana, who is tied for 2nd in the NL in saves with 31, picked up the win in relief. Marcus White took the loss for Pittsburgh. The Cubs lead the National League Central Division by a game.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 28-year old third baseman Jon Gonzales had a real shot to win the game. Pittsburgh pitcher Marcus White was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Gonzales hit a run-scoring single. The Cubs had a walk-off triumph.
"I was just going up there trying to see good pitches, that was about it," said Phillips.
