Rays Send New York Home with 6-5 Loss
|
The Tampa Bay Rays besoiled an otherwise fine performance by New York second baseman Josh Egerton by beating the Yankees, 6-5, at Tropicana Field. Egerton was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Vince Fischer notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. His record now sits at 1-1. Tampa Bay is now 43-54, New York 45-55.
The Rays got a big hit from left fielder Juan Zertuche. In the bottom of the sixth, Zertuche smacked a 3-run home run off New York pitcher Billy Michaels. It was his 4th home run of the season. Suddenly, the Rays were ahead, 6-5.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said New York manager Harry Jacoby. "But we decided not to take it."
