The Pittsburgh Pirates could not turn a fine performance from second baseman Tim Lewis into a win. Instead, the Kansas City Royals prevailed, 5-4, in 10 innings. Lewis was 4-5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 doubles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. With the win, Kansas City pushed its record to 22-19.

The Royals got a clutch hit from first baseman Levi LaFaive. In the bottom of the tenth, he hit a run-scoring single to center, to win the game for the Royals.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Kansas City manager Ryokan Kobayashi.
